NIO is a multidisciplinary organization carrying out research in physical, chemical, biological, geological and geophysical aspects of oceanography. It has a team of instrumentation scientists dedicated to the development of instruments for oceanographic studies.

The institute keeps abreast with international developments in research and has created few facilities in ocean engineering, control of biofouling & corrosion and marine archaeology. At present over 500 scientific and technical staff contribute to the institute's endeavors.

The institute has well equipped laboratories connected by local area network (LAN) with distributed computing facilities. It also runs the research vessel Sagar Kanya (owned by Department of Ocean Development), for its open research programmes. Other infrastructural facilities are the Responsible Oceanographic Data Centre (RNODC), the National Information Centre for Marine Sciences (NICMAS). Institute has also commissioned "Indian National Oceanographic Internet Server (INOIS) with high-speed Internet connectivity
