This contribution depicts new technologies and possibilities in marine monitoring by combined systems of operational event-controlled fixed monitoring networks and numerical models including facilities for system control as well as for data and information processing and dissemination. The automated measurement and monitoring system developed within the EUREKA-EUROMAR project MERMAID - includes long-term measurement of marine meteorological, oceanographic and hydro-biogeochemical variables as well as remote and event-controlled sampling plus data post-processing. Quality-control and archiving complete the operational measurement system. The operational network software allows remote process control and assessment of each single module and sensor as well as control of the entire system. Up to 50 measurement sites can be controlled and managed from one land station.
Within the the EUREKA-EUROMAR OPMOD-project operational nowand forecast models have been developed including information processing and dissemination according to requirements of individual end-users.
The combination of MERMAID and OPMOD technologies comprises the state of the art in marine - and more generally aquabc - environmental monitoring. Events and processes measured or detected on the spot by the MERMAID fixed monitoring network can be traced with OR" in space and time. Thus history, extension, impact and development of processes become accessible on the overall spatial scale in three dimensions- The operation control and sampling strategy of the MERMAID system can be adjusted right in time to expected processes forecasted by the OPMOD system. Vice versa detailed modeling activities can be specially dedicated to events detected by the MERMAID system using the high accurate nowcast results in order to obtain a fully synoptic view.
