Remotely Operated Vehicles, automation, artificial intelligence and robotics have found numerous applications in underwater environment. They are well suited for jobs that are 'dirty, dangerous and difficult' (the 3-Ds) for humans. Besides this 3-D justification for use of robots, they are useful for following reasons: a) Operation in hazardous and hostile environment b) Reduction in production cost c) Untiring/ continuous work d) Increased productivity e) Better accuracy increased product quality f) More flexibility and responsivity to innovation

2. The Decision-Maker is faced with the dilemma to choose the level of automation that can be justified within the technical and economic constraints of the program. The purpose of this paper is to present a methodology, which can be used to evaluate and rank different approaches to automating the functions and tasks, planned in underwater environment.

3. The methodology employed is based on Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) . AHP permits the introduction of individual judgements to resolve conflict that normally arises when incomparable criteria underly the selection process. Because of the large number of factors involved in the model, the overall problem is decomposed into 4 subproblems individually focussing on human productivity, economics, design and operations. The result from each are then combined to yield the final rankings. This methodology for non-cognitive evaluation of underwater applications of robots and automation has been demonstrated with the help of a case study and a final parametric analysis has been carried out.
