There has been growing interest in understanding the role of oceans in the overall heat balance of the planet. Atmospheric circulation and oceanic currents both transport heat from lower to higher latitude and hence maintain an overall balance. The fluctuating currents in ocean contain far more kinetic energy (KE) than the mean currents.
In the present work monthly mesoscale KE/mass has been computed from TOPEX/Poseidon altimeter data for a period of 4 years(1993 -96) in the Indian Ocean. Various steps carried out to compute eddy KE in brief is described - Each of the ascending and descending track of T/P has been rotated by an angle such that the tracks are calculated and is converted to geostrophic currents which are perpendicular to the axis. From these currents, eddy KEs are computed assuiming isotropic condition. The axes are transformed back by same angle to get the original latitude/longitude values. Monthly maps of eddy KE and its deviation from 4 years(1993-96) ar eprepared and the interannual variability o fth eeddy KE described.
The value of eddy KE range from 20 to 2000 cm²/s². Interannual variation of monthly eddy KE can be clearly studied from the prepared maps. The maximum variability in KE is found in Somali region during the south-West monsoon due to the strong Somali jet. In southern Indian Ocean, some isolated peaks of high KE variability is found. In southern Indian Ocean, some isolated peaks of high KE variability is found. In the equatorial region, the magnitude of eddy KE is observed to be high. These magnitudes do not represent the rael values as the singularity of geostrophy fails at the equator.
