With the rapid growth of the internet as a tool for accessing marine datasets, new technologies are emerging to enable online access to databases. The Australian Oceanographic Date Centre (AODC) has developed an internet server, known as the Environmental Data Web Server (EDWS), to provide interactive visualisation and data extraction capabilities to a number of AODC datasets. These include near real-time temperature and salinity profiles, a metadata directory and environmental reports.
The EDWS provides a spatial interface that allows users to define a region of interest. Different datasets can be selected and variables such as time, location and data themes can be specified. Data can then be extracted in a variety of data formats. The web browser application allows users to query and visualise data within an internet browser environment thus providing rapid access to marine data using familiar interface tools. This paper describes the design of the EDWS application and outlines the benefits of providing access to databases through a single interface.
