National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), USA launches and controls polar orbiting meteorological satellites for remote sensing applications like Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Vegetation Index (VI), snow melt studies etc using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer data (AVHRR). National Remote Sensing Agency acquires data from NOAA satellites for Indian users, processes the data and supplies to the users in different media for various applications. One of the important application is the calculation of SST, one of the important parameter for atmospheric, oceanographic and fishery biological studies. The down link data rate of NOAA/AVHRR is only 665.4 K/Bits. Presently Personal Computers (PC) with required peripherals are available at low cost to handle NOAA/AVHRR data. So Pentium based NOAA/AVHRR data processing system including SST generation is designed.

This system generates AVHRR products in Level 1B & LGSOWG formats with CD-ROM as media. The data from CD-ROM in Level 1B format can be down loaded on any system using standard image analysis packages like ERDAS IMAGINE, EASI/PACE or VISTA. It has got packages to generate SST and VI data sets. The package is developed in MS DOS environment using 'C' language. The total design of the system for generating SSTs is presented in this paper specifically the information technology available for the generation of one of the fundamental oceanographic parameters viz SST. The data sets generated with the above package are compared with the regular data sets that are being generated at NRSA on other commercially available systems and are found to be OK. The above system with indegeneously developed hardware and software package will be highly useful to process NOAA/AVHRR data.
