With the spread of the Internet and its proven socioeconomic benefits, many leading organisations have implemented this technology in their campuses. This has led to the development of Intranets.
Intranets not only interconnect people within the same campus, but also disseminate information across spatially separated branches of the organisation without compromising data security. Recent studies show that effective Intranets enhance the net productivity of organisations by increasing communications, computerising workflows and reducing paperwork and time required to accomplish goals.
This has attracted research organisations, whose main assets are researchers, to this new concept. At the National Institute of Oceanography, since the implementation of the Intranet, significant changes have been noticed in the efficiency, morale, work atmosphere and productivity.
This study analyses the changes due to Intranet implementation. The paper further presents statistics of usage on the Intranet.
