INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN OCEANOGRAPHY (ITO-98) GOA, INDIA 12-16 OCTOBER 1998

World Wide Web (WWW) has emerged as a viable and legitimated way to publish information. With the launch of number of oceanography or marine sciences related sites, a variety of oceanography related information is published over WWW. However, there is not even a single subject dedicated search engine. This hampers the efficient searching of subject specific information published on the Net. Manthan ver.1.0 is the attempt to develop first search engine dedicated to oceanography and allied sciences.

This first oceanographic search engine christened as "MANTHAN" not only symbolizes but also imitates in one or the many aspect, the Indian mythological incident of "Samudra Mathan". Similarly this search engine aims as churning the ocean of the Web for oceanographic resources available to benefit the mankind in its ever ending quest of exploringand expoliting the oceanographic resources sustainably.

Manthan, is a term-search engine, which wworks on a custom-built database for the specialized terms and allows direct access to all related documents via hyperlink. This custom-built database stores data related to location, key feature and description of oceanographic Internet resources. Manthan currently collates information about 500 Web pages/sites related to oceanography and marine sciences over Internet.

Manthan with its unique data accumulation and efficient search strategy, will soon become the popular search tool for locating oceanographic resources on the Web.
