Traditionally directories has been used to locate Who's Who and What's Where in the area of ones interest. But in the present scenario, scanning through the pages of directories has proven time consuming. Databases and Networking has proven to be a vital tool to overcome this problem. Database Management Systems with their power and capability to collate large volume of data and efficient query system, have been used for developing numbers of directories. Networks with their ability to disseminate the data in real-time are used to retrieve data information from a remote location. With the spread of Internet, it is furthermore possible to disseminate information in real-time across the continents in multimedia form.
"Daryavardi" means sea-fairer. Daryavardi ver. 1.1 is a web interfaced directory of oceanographers and oceanographic institutions, maritime agencies located in India and adjoining regions. Developed using freeware MSQL, Daryavardi has two databases one each for personnel and institutional information collation. One of the major feature of MSQL is its ability to create efficient index which consumes less space in memory, which makes it feasible to disseminate data over the internet in real-time.
Apart from the information on variety of aspects, both the personnel and institutional databases also collates images, photographs and sketch of an individual or an organisation respectively. In order to facilitate frequent data updation, two sets of access/retrieval front ends were developed. First front-end developed for Net-Surfers only allow retrieving the data/information. However, another for database managers, allows adding, editing of the information collated in the database.
Currently, Daryavardi ver.1.1 collates information about the personnel and institutions in India, however, its scope can be expanded to adjoining countries too. Once, enriched with the information, Daryavardi ver.1.1 would become major and authenticate source of information on oceanographic institutions and personnel in the Indian sub-continent region. Daryavardi can be accessible over the net at http://www.nio.org/daryavardi/
