Monthly, seasonal and annual variability of the various hydrological parameters such as evaporation, precipitation and moisture flux is studied over the tropical Indian Ocean for the period January 1982 to December, 1994 using the National Centre for Environmental Prediction (NCEP)/National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) reanalysis data. The in-situ and satellite [from the Special Sensor Microwave lmager (SSM/1) onboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)] estimates of evaporation (using the bulk aerodynamic formulae) and precipitation [from the Very High Resolution Radiometer (VHRR) onboard the Indian National Satellite (INSAT); Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) onboard the NOAA series of satellites and from SSMI sensor onboard the DMSP] over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal differ significantly from the model A comparison of the model estimates of hydrological parameters with climatological Hastenrath and Lamb,(1979) and the Comprehensive Ocean Atmosphere Data .

Set (COADS) and satellite results are also presented. Further, we look into the role of El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and lndian summer monsoon (ISM) on these parameters. The results suggest that the current remote sensing techniques and models are not able to depict the hydrological parameters to the desired accuracy and horizontal resolution of the in-sftu parameters such as evaporation and precipitation over the north Indian Ocean.
