Upwelling is the process in the sea where by the subsurface water move up towards surface. Upwelling regions of the ocean are known for highest production. In the tropical oceans nutrients are limiting factor for primary production. In the tropical oceans nutrients are limiting factor primary production. Upwelled waters are rich in nutrients enhance the primary production. In this study we use NOAA AVHRR data to monitor upwelling process long North West Coast of Arabian Sea. Sea surface temperature (SST) images generated for this area using thermal IR bands of AVRRR. A georefrence image was generated for geometric regestration of multidate images. The belt of cool subsurface water surrounded by belt of warm water along the coast can be easily identified in the sea surface temperature (SST) image. This enables the detection o fthe upwelling more specifically the location of upwelling zone, persistence and timing of movements using satellite data. The event is observed along the Arabian coast during Pre South-West monsoon(June-July) and along the Gujarat coast during post south west monsoon(Sept.-Oct.). The coastal process are the results of pceanographic process in the Arabian Sea occuring during the South West monsoon. Different types of the features were observed during the event. The event has proved to benefit local fishing operation. The response of the fish to the enhanced productivity due to upwelling has been described.
