At present oceanographic observation data are generally organized in flat text files, sometimes as records of varying length. Such an approach is warranted from archival storage standpoint, but the problem arise when data are needed from those sets for processing. Organisation of data for modern relational DBMS is an urgent task. Many organizations apply relational DBs and different DBMSs when working with data. It often happens that the data structure represents by itself the normalized version of the structures that have been used before. Ultimately, not only the data transfer to relational DB would be important here but their structure complex designing also.

The author offers the model of presentation of oceanographic observation data for relational DB. Based on the basis of emphasizing general characteristics using the objective approach, the model can be applied for organizing the data under various types of observations. Observation data in the information system, based on the model of observation presentation, are not connected via space-time restrictions or the restrictions on observation type. Using such a model it is possible to choose the data by criteria, assigned particularly to location, or time or type of observation. The data of each particular type of observation can be organized where appropriate by some certain way differed from the others. That is, regulating the data organization on the whole, the model enables one to flexibly and in a different way organize the data in each particular case.

The work is underway at RIHMI-WDC to make this model applicable in realization of the Integrated Data Base on the basis of DBMS Oracle7.
