INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN OCEANOGRAPHY (ITO-98) GOA, INDIA 12-16 OCTOBER 1998

The Western Indian Ocean region is greatly behind other regions of the world in use of data communications technologies. While use of electronic networks to'access computer oceanographic databa$ds and exchange information are everyday matters in many parts of the world, these techniques are virtually unknown in this region. Development professionals and oceanographic researchers face severe difficulties in communication among themselves and with colleagues outside the region.

This has obvious implicatlon, for the quality of their work,done in isolation from rapidly changing developments elsewhere . the demand is great in the region for improvement in electronic communication and networking capabilities.

This paper is going to give details in the utilisation various data communication technologies and having been applied to gain and share experiences and knowledge. The results of which can be used to improve Information systems, electronic conununications and computer network currently being used in Kenya and the region. The data communication technology equipment being discussed in this paper includes computers, modems, scanner, CD-ROM technology, telephone systems, Internet and Tntranet.
