Database management systems for oceanographic and biological data

A set of special database management systems has been developed to fulfill the multipurpose interdisciplinary management of ocean data using personal computers. The main objective of these systems is to provide easy, quick and effective work with interdisciplinary ocean data in oceanography, marine biology, and ecology. Some versions of these systems have the possibilities to manage biological data even at the species level.

One of them, the CruBase system was developed to provide the effective management of the oceanographic cruises' (multi-ship surveys) data. System permits to load and compactly store all main types of data obtained from research cruises: chemical, biological, meteorological, etc. The data of up to the 320 variables (plus full lists of phytoplankton and zooplankton species) for 3000 stations can be stored in a single database. The system gives the possibilities to make the complicated search using multiparameter criteria; prepare data for maps, sections and other standard types of oceanographic data presentation. The main advantage of the system is the possibility to make the cross-parameter queries, for example, to choose the phytoplankton biomass values at the user defined density level, or select the chlorophyll values at the determined transparency range, etc. Some CruBase versions support also the possibility to use the SST satellite images as a background for the station map. SST data at selected points can be included into processing.

Internal format of the CruBase system permits to store a quality code (flag) with each data value. During the loading the quality flag 0 is assigned to each data value (with the meaning: data were not checked). The GETADE Formatting Guidelines for Oceanographic Data Exchange scheme is used for quality code flags. Special subsystem of the CruBase DBMS was developed to provide the possibility of the effective quality control of the data loaded in the CruBase system (CruBase Data Control System - DCS).

These systems are permanently in use in recent years to process and analyze Black Sea regional data within the framework of the international projects: TU-Black Sea, CoMSBlack, GEF-BSEP.
