Regional Black Sea Environmental Internet Node has been created jointly by the Marine Hydrophysical Institute (Ukraine, Sevastopol) and the Black Sea Environmental Programme Coordination Unit (Istanbul) to assist in regional research, protection of the marine environment of the Black Sea and its sustainable development.
Contrary to the other data and information servers, it includes as data as a wide range of the metadata and information relevant to the environmental conditions and research in the region. Now the Node includes these main directories: Metadata, Data, Selected Satellite Images, The Black Sea Red Data Book.
Information and metadata are freely available for all through the Node home-page (http://bsein.mhi.iuf.net/). Data are provided through the FTP server after the registration and supplying information concerning the intended use of requested data.
The important part of the Metadata directory is a Web-version of the updated Black Sea Information System that was originally developed in 1996. It contains information on: organizations; major regional marine data sets; scientists studying the Black Sea; (inter)national research projects/programs (since 1990); cruise summary reports (since 1979); Black Sea bibliography (since 1974); acronyms and abbreviations. Additional information is included on the main regional international programs TU-Black Sea and CoMSBlack.
The Data directory comprises various environmental data for the Black Sea region: recent data sets obtained in the framework of international programs, historical data opened for public use and other data sets (GIS data, for example) obtained from the main data centers like WDC-A Oceanography and UNEP/GRID.
The Black Sea Red Data Book is the first regional Red Data Book ever prepared for the marine environment anywhere. It contains scientific descriptions, images and distribution maps for 160 endangered species.
