"Oceanographer" : applied software for hydrographic surveys

Belokopytov V.N
Marine branch of Ukrainian Research Hydrometeorological Institute

"Oceanographer" program has been designed for processing and graphical presentation of oceanographic data. Main characteristics derived from data of particular hydrographic survey are: T, S, density (in situ or potential), sound velocity, Burnt-Vaisala frequency, density ratio, vertical and horizontal gradients, dynamical topolgraphy, geostrophic shear, APE, heat and salt storage. User can manually define hardly formalised variables like a depth of mixed layer or a water mass core while viewing vertical profiles.

Map section of program provides plotting of :
Value on user-specified depth
Value on user-specified isopycnal
Depth of user-specified contour
Value or depth on minimum or maximum
Value or depth of manually defined points
Mean value user-specified layer
Transect section allows to plot values in the user-specified depth or isopycnal range. Section of vertical profiles provides:
User-specified or automatically created axes
Multiple profiles on the same graph
Editing on the initial data set
Mean profiles with r.m.s
Scatter diagrams
T,S curves with isopycnals
Manually mark points for user-defined map
This program uses points for uses SURFER Golden Software as plotting tool in the map and transacts sections. DOS version widely used in oceanographic institutions FSU, Win95 releases is scheduled this year.
