INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN OCEANOGRAPHY (ITO-98) GOA, INDIA 12-16 OCTOBER 1998

In India during the past 50 years several Central and National level fisheries and oceanographic research and educational Institutes have been established. A Central Deemed University for fisheries education has also come into existence. Nearly a dozen colleges of fisheries and several traditional Universities have also started offering graduate and postgraduate level degrees on various disciplines in fisheries and oceanography. In this paper the history of fisheries education and training in India and the available library facilities are detailed. The educational programs, library holdings, services and publications in the various research and educational institutions are discussed in detail. In order to promote and facilitate sharing of the resources available within these libraries and to provide maximum information to students, teachers, scholars and scientists the need for closer network among these institutes is highlighted. A central Fisheries University Library and Advisory body an a national basis are required to be framed as regulatory body to establish and implement such a rationalisation of acquisition needs and to form a network system of fisheries educational institutes Libraries in the country.
