Baltic Environmental Database contains a large collection of oceanographic data for the Baltic Sea. These data cover observations since 1900 until today. An SQL database server manages this database and allows a user to access the data via Internet. Modern web technology makes it possible to work with a database remotely from anywhere using a Java enabled browser. This drastically increases the availability of the data and eliminates platform dependence. A user can use any hardware that has an appropriate browser (Netscape's Communicator, Sun's HotJava, and Microsofts Internet Explorer).
This paper discusses our web tools to analyze data from a database. These tools allow users to interact with the database, to select information and regions of interest, and to analyze them. A Java-based easy-to-use graphical user interface makes it possible to formulate queries in a dynamic manner, provides zooming through the map with multiple levels of detail, and then to select data using an interactive map. The possibilities of these tools range from obtaining data for an oceanographic station to constructing a vertical profile with statistical parameters and the time-depth graph for temporal variations of variables for any area of the Baltic Sea.
